Before there were highways . . . there were Heroes by Robert Knapp, Watercolor, 11 x 14

Long before paved highways and purpose-built racetracks, America's earliest racing machines competed on dirt roads, brick streets, wooden board tracks—and even beaches.

This 1910 20-liter V4 race car represents an era when courage often mattered more than engineering. These machines challenged everything the country could throw at them, including the legendary coast-to-coast endurance races that helped prove both automobiles and tires could survive America's rugged landscape.

As an Akron artist, I was especially drawn to this subject because of its connection to Firestone Tires and the city's remarkable role in shaping the history of the automobile.

This original 11" × 14" watercolor is my tribute to those pioneering drivers, engineers, and innovators whose spirit of adventure helped launch American motorsports. Painting comes mounted in Double Mat protected by poly sleeve and ready to frame.

"Before there were highways... there were heroes."
